 Other metals used for industrial springs include copper, nickel, titanium and tantalum. The strongest spring design uses braided and wound wire. This type can handle sudden and heavy loads. The largest industrial springs, those over six inches in diameter, must be hot rolled and coiled around special machinery. 

 Four Types of Springs

Among the diverse array of springs, four primary types of springs are pivotal to various applications: helical, compression, extension, and torsion springs. Each type is designed with specific applications in mind 

 Spring is a mechanical component that, when compressed by a load, stores the energy, and releases it when the load is removed. This is the normal way all springs function irrespective of their types, as expressed by Hooke's law 

 Again, there are three classes of springs: linear (or constant rate) springs, variable rate springs, and constant force springs. 

 The Physics of Springs

Hooke's Law states that the more you deform a spring, the more force it will take to deform it further. Using the example of a common compression spring, the more you compress the spring, the more force it will take to compress it further. 

 How to Measure a Compression Spring

1. Measure the spring wire diameter, preferably to 3 decimal places for accuracy using calipers.
2. Measure the outside diameter of the coils. ...
3. Measure the length in its free condition (uncompressed).
4. Count the number of coils. ...
5. Note the winding direction of the coils.
